Back-ups Explained

Back-Ups

File back-ups are self explanatory - you make a copy of your most important files and in the event of a PC/Server failure, you simply access these back-ups thereby retaining your most recent files. Businesses back up data they deem vulnerable in the event of  data corruption, hardware failure, hacking, user error or other unforeseen events. Backups/Online back-ups capture and synchronize a point-in-time snapshot that is then used to return data to its previous state.

Risks

Back-ups of old would have been primarily on-premise solutions which were fine. But, as businesses began to collect and hold more sensitive information (customer details, accounts info, employee info for e.g.), the risk of losing this data became too great. Think about it - your employees store important data on their PCs which are backed up to a server on the same premises. God forbid, your business gets flooded or worse, destroying PCs and the Server. What happens your data? Well..recovery would be difficult and time consuming if it could be recovered at all. So how do you prepare for a disaster like this?

The 3-2-1 rule..

Online back-ups

3-2-1 rule

Having on-premise solutions are fine, as long as they are used as part of the 3-2-1 rule.

A 3-2-1 strategy essentially means having at least three copies of your data, two of which are local but on different storage types , and with at least 1 online (off-site). Why an online copy? Because if a building had fire or flood damage, it wouldn't matter how many onsite copies you had, they could all be destroyed. With an online copy it dramatically reduces the probability of everything being lost. 3-2-1 rule

Online Back-ups

Online back-ups are the off-site solution of choice for both SMEs and Enterprises alike for their feature sets and cost effectiveness. And most importantly, the data is off-site, secured by redundant backups, encrypted with enterprise-level security and maintained by teams of well-trained IT administrators.
